IGANGA DISTRICT PROFILE

Iganga district is located in the Eastern part of the country bordering Mayuge and Jinja in the South East, Kamuli and Pallisa in the North and Bugiri in the East.

The district has a total population of 781,344 (projected 2005) with 4 counties and 24 sub-counties and 2 Town councils.

In line with the National Health Policy (1999) and the Health Sector Strategic Plan (2000/1 – 2005/6), there has been marked increase of establishment of health service infrastructure in the district. The health services are now run under 5 Health sub-districts (HSDs). These are Busiki at Nsinze, Luuka at Kiyunga, Bugweri at Busesa,  Kigulu South at Iganga hospital and Kigulu North at Bugono.

Health services in the district are provided by a number of stakeholders including government, NGO and private health units/organisations.  These are quite well distributed in the district though the physical infrastructure itself is very poor.

Our Programs

Method of work:

Activities shall be implemented in a mix of ways in order to achieve tangible results with minimal costs using the following methods:
  1. Direct implementation by UDHA
  2. Building and promoting team work and partnerships with other local CBOs and NGOs in the communities we serve.
  3. Collaboration with existing government structures at local and national level.
  4. Working through village health committees and other CORPs (community’s own resource persons).

Target group:
UDHA’s main target shall be children, youth and women in hard to reach areas with poor access to social services. Children shall be given special consideration to ensure their well-being. Children and women need great protection since they are the hope of communities and the nation. UDHA will ensure the children are given adequate protection against exploitation and consequently contribute to their growth and development potential. This is a worth while long term investment of great value to the individual communities.
The main focus shall be improving social services delivery at household and community level. UDHA will therefore work with the locally elected members of society; cultural, religious and opinion leaders in planning and implementation especially in advocacy and mobilisation of communities.
